Crafty Mama to the rescue!

My 4 year old son loves preschool, and the one thing he looks forward to the most is "Show and Tell" on Fridays.  Rarely does a day go by where he asks, "How many sleeps until show and tell?"  At his school, each week's show and tell corresponds to the letter that they are learning about that week.  This week's letter is the letter "I."  We searched all over our house for something that began with the letter "I" so that he could bring it with him on Friday.  I had to explain to him (every day) that we couldn't bring the eyes for Mr. Potato head because the word "eye" actually starts with the letter "e."  It's a mind blowing concept for a pre-schooler isn't it?  LOL! Sadly we did not find anything that began with "I," and let me tell you he was close to tears that he didn't have anything.

As a crafty mother, I couldn't let him down of course.  I hopped on Ravelry to see what I could find.  Lo and behold there are tons of free patterns for Ice Cream found in their database.  It took me probably 2.5 hours of crocheting, but my son now has three crocheted Ice Cream cones to bring to school tomorrow.  Hooray for having all the materials on hand already from my stash!

The first cone I made was kind of small, but it also took the least amount of time.

Hook:  G (4.0 mm)
Yarn: various stash
other:  3 oz bathroom cup, batting

The next two I made were very easy to churn out.  I even made it easier for myself and crocheted the two pieces together as I crocheted the ruffle edge.  I also omitted the cuff that was supposed to go at the top of the cone, since I did the ruffled edge instead.

Yarn: various stash
other: batting

I made two at the little man's request because I think he wants to share it with his little girl friend.  My son is 4 years old and wrote his first love note today.  Ack!  I'm not ready for this.  At the same time I'm proud that he wrote it out all on his own, and only needed help with spelling "loves."

WIP for 11/9/11

It's Wednesday once again, so it's time to take a look at what everyone is working on.  Besides what I have on my needles go and check out what other people are working on over at Tami's Ami's blog.

I am in the final home stretch with my daughter's sweater coat set.  Originally I had only planned on making just the sweater, but it turned out that I had enough yarn to whip out the coordinating hat as well.  Today's task is to sew on the zipper using this awesome zipper tutorial for knitted sweaters.

Last week I cast on a project for me.  I love Harry Potter and anything Potter related, and after seeing the Deathly Hallows Part I movie I just had to have some of the knitwear from the movie.  When Hermione's cardigan was released as a pattern, I knew I just HAD TO make it for me one day.  I am nearly done with the hood, and then it's on to the yoke and fair isle.

I hate to end this on a sad note, but a friend of mine passed away this week and it's all I've been thinking about the past few days.  I was devastated when I heard that he is no longer with us.  He had a huge role in the memories of my college years, and I will always remember the good times I shared with him.  Good night and farewell Jeff, you will be missed.

Finished Ziggy and WIPs for 11/2/11

Ta Da!  I finally got around to finishing Dylan's Ziggy sweater last week.  After blocking the sweater out and trying it on again, it's a little big on him.  Oh well, that just means he gets to wear it for more than one winter.  =)  Here's a picture of it on before I blocked it out:

Do you think he likes it?  =)

Now on to the WIPs:
I am still finishing up my daughter's sweater coat, now that I have my son's sweater done.  I've already sewed on and seamed the sleeves.  All I need to do now is pick up and knit the zipper band as well as the collar before sewing on the zipper.

I've been dragging my feet on this project because I have never sewn on a zipper before, and to be honest I was a little bit intimidated by it.  However one late night when I was perusing on Pinterest.com I found an excellent tutorial on how to sew on a zipper to a knit garment.  I certainly added that pin to my boards, and breathed a bit easier about going forth with this project.  I've also realized how addicting Pinterest can be.  Not that I needed another time-suck between Ravelry and Facebook.  Ha!  Who needs sleep anyway!?

Don't forget to visit Tami's Ami's blog to see other WIPs for the week.
